Seeing who a check was paid to
Add the check image and FinTrack fills in the payee and memo.
Banks usually send a paper check as just an amount and a check number. No bank-data service, Plaid included, passes along the check image, so FinTrack reads it from a copy you give it.
Adding a check image
- Save the image from your bank's website or app, or take a photo of your own copy.
- Open the transaction and choose Add image under Check image. On your phone it's Add check image.
- FinTrack reads the payee, memo, check number, date and amount, usually within a few seconds.
You can also drop check images on the Receipts page or forward them to your receipt address. FinTrack tells checks and receipts apart on its own.
How it's matched
- Same check number and amount: filled in straight away.
- Anything less certain: shown as a suggestion on the Receipts page for you to confirm.
- A check you add from a transaction always goes to that transaction.
The payee is marked Read from the check image, and a bank sync never overwrites it. A payee you typed yourself is never replaced. If the memo is set and the transaction has no notes, the memo goes into notes.
If the written-out amount and the number box disagree, you'll see a warning and nothing is filled in automatically.
Privacy
Check images are kept in private storage. Photos are read by Xiaomi's MiMo models through OpenCode, and PDFs by Google's Gemini models, the same as receipts. The image itself shows your account and routing numbers, so the AI model sees them while reading it, but FinTrack keeps only the last 4 digits of the account number from what it reads. The coach never sees check images. You can turn document reading off in Settings → AI.
